There is a Home that is truly our home. And the Father in that home bends all His energy to make possible our taking up residence there. Permanently. It really is that simple.

It is simple, but it is also somewhat involved—because life there is so rich. This is not surprising. Really and truly being at home calls for more than meets the eye. We all can see that every day. And so St. Bede casts the Lord’s birth in Bethlehem in these clear terms: He has come to bring us home.

“He who sits at His Father’s right hand, finds no room in an inn, that He might prepare for us in His Father’s house many mansions; He is born not in His Father’s house, but in an inn and by the way side, because through the mystery of the incarnation He was made the way by which to bring us to our country, where we shall enjoy the truth and the life.”

This Christmas may we rediscover the Way—the way to the only thing, the only place, the only life that matters. May our very celebration be so crafted, and so blessed from above, that it opens our eyes to see, and so to begin to enter more fully into that Life. We get something of a glimpse into this life by realizing that it is not in an inn with strangers. It is living at home. Because He has made His Home to be my home, nay our home. Forever.

May our Christmastide, and beyond, be animated by the joy of this truth. Merry Christmas! ~ ~ ~
